These are tough times for science and technology journalists, who, if they still have jobs, not often have the time and travel budgets required for in-depth reporting. But some journalists are still managing to produce tough, labor-intensive, on-the-ground investigations of vitally important topics. One standout is my long-time soul mate Glenn Zorpette of IEEE Spectrum , the magazine of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Six age agone Glenn traveled to Iraq and came back with a disturbing series, “ Re-engineering Iraq “, on how the U.S. and its allies were wasting billions on efforts to give Iraqis a steady supply of electricity. Zorpette has now followed up that report, a finalist all for a National Mag Award, with an even more alarming investigation of botched attempts to electrify Afghanistan. Glenn spent three weeks within Afghanistan reporting “ Re-engineering Afghanistan “, published within the October issue of Spectrum . He shows that, astatine a time when millions of Americans are struggling to make ends group, our government is squandering tens of billions of our tax dollars overseas. [More]

The anniversary of The Chophouse Massacre, a Mafia shooting in 1935, was earlier this week. Learn all about how the Family is structured, how it operates, how it formed and how it has evolved.
Element the global economic crisis continues, countries around the world, collectively, someone run ascending at smallest $40 trillion in debt. Which nations have the largest slices of that massive liability pie?
More attention has been paying within current years to the beginning of “Internet policy,” merely scholars and pundits disagree about whether online political activity is different in kind from more traditional forms of activism. Does the global range and blazing speed of the Internet affect the essential character or dynamics of on the internet political protest? Within Digitally Enabled Social Change, Jennifer Earl and Katrina Kimport canvass key characteristics of Web activism and investigate their impacts against organizing and participation. Earl and Kimport argue that the internet offers two key affordances relevant to activism: sharply reduced costs for creating, organizing, and participating in nitpick; and the cut need all for activists to be physically together trim to act together. A assemble can be organized and demonstrators recruited entirely on the web, without the fee of printing and mail; associate activist can create an online petition in minutes and gather e-signatures from coast to coast using only her laptop. Drawing on grounds from samples of on the internet petitions, boycotts, and letter-writing and e-mailing campaigns, Peer and Kimport show that the more these affordances are leveraged, the more transformative the changes to organizing and participating in protest; the less these affordances are leveraged, the more superficial the changes. The rally organizers, for paradigm, can save money on communication and coordination, but the project of staging the muster remains essentially the same. Tools that allow a single activist to create and circulate a petition entirely online, however, enable more extreme changes in the procedure. The transformative nature of these changes, Earl and Kimport suggest, demonstrate the need to revisit long-standing theoretical assumptions about social aerobics.
